Does New Jersey reflect the entire country?

Forget all the New Jersey jokes, there’s something here that is very interesting, the cars people are buying and not buying in New Jersey.  New Jersey is a big state with everything from dense urban populations to farms so I think it is a great tool to forcast what’s happening or going to happen across the country.  So lets look at New Jersey car sales, according to AutoCount there is not a domestically build car in the top 10 new cars registered from January through October 2008.  Two Hondas, two Toyotas, a Nissan, BMW, Hyundai, Infiniti, Lexus and a Mazda but not one GM, Ford or Chrysler product ranks in the tope 10 new cars registered in New Jersey this year.  Things only get slightly better when you look at the top 10 selling light trucks sold so far in New Jersey; only 3 are built by the Big 3, the Ford Edge, Ford F-Series and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.  The biggest shock is that not one GM product is represented!

As this country works with the Big 3 to help restore profitability the first thing they need is sales!  The dealers that represent the Big 3 are starving for business.  People who are looking for value can find a tremendous amount of it at a Big 3 dealership, they are desperate for your business!

13,550 is a big number… even for the Big 3

Between the Big 3 they have 13,550 dealerships, that’s just too many.  One aspect of any type of restructuring of these companies must include the elimination of some of these dealers.  Who knows, maybe every dealer is in jeopardy?  Think about it, most products are sold without the manufacturer/dealer model very successful while the auto business is dying.

If you are shopping for a car now you need to evaluate the dealer’s viability on top of all the other concerns you have as a car buyer.  You must consider this question before you sign the buyer’s contract, “how would it affect me if this dealership went out of business?”  If that would cause a problem for you, you might consider buying your car somewhere else.

Every auto manufacturer is hurting

Honda announced that they are dramatically lowering their sales and profit forecasts.  Honda is laying people off and changing their future plans all in an attempt to avoid a financial disaster.  It seems that the Big 3 are not the only car companies hurting at this time.  As a car shopper this is a tremendous advantage for you.  If you walk into a Honda dealer you have an unprecedented amount of leverage.  Remember, for a Honda salesperson this is a new phenomena, they are use to telling you what you will pay for their cars.  Now a Honda shopper can demand and get a great price if they go about buying the car properly!

Yet another auto dealer scam

During these tough economic times car dealers are desperate to make money so you must be prepared to protect yourself from a scam.  Raymond Wilkinson III, former owner of Poughkeepsie Chevrolet in Poughkeepsie NY is being sued for fraud by the state’s Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Mr. Wilkinson is accused of selling used cars that had been rental cars without disclosing their real history.  Documents got forged and people were misled when they purchased these cars.  I am sure this is not the only dealer committing this type of fraud so you must get a CarFax report before you EVER buy a used car!

Does the auto manufacturer want your local dealer to go out of business?

An African-American car dealer in Rochester NY thinks his manufacturer Chrysler wants him to go out of business.  He may be right, but not because of the reason he thinks.  To read the story, click here.  This dealer is accusing Chrysler of trying to force him out of business because of his race; if they are trying to force him out of business the more likely reason because they like all of the Big 3 need to eliminate dealerships to make the remaining dealers profitable.  There is not enough business to sustain the dealer network currently in place for the Big 3, so some need to go.

If you are shopping for a Big 3 vehicle you need to consider the possibility that the dealership might not be there forever!  The first clue is the number of vehicles the dealership has in stock, if they have a lot of empty parking spots on their lots, be careful!

It’s getting uglier in the auto business

Manufacturers and auto dealers are both struggling mightily so it should not be surprising that the ugliness is escalating.  One specifically ugly incident is happening near Savannah Georgia.  There, O.C. Welch a dealer from Hardeeville S.C. sells domestically made cars and he is facing s tough time.  So Mr. Welch is running radio commercials that scold people for buying Japanese cars with comments like, don’t come crying to me when you lose your job and calling these cars rice ready… not road ready.  Obviously this is wrong, but I think it gives you the car shopper an idea of how desperate some dealers are, especially domestic auto dealers, use this to your advantage!

Will we always have a Big 3?

Today the heads of the Big 3 are again meeting with Congress hoping for an infusion of cash to keep their floundering business afloat and the question that needs to be asked is… do we need all three of the Big 3?  Let’s look at each of these companies individually:

Ford is by far the healthiest US auto maker.  Their cash position is the best of the Big 3.  Both Ford and Lincoln have made great strides in the last couple of years and they have some great products being introduced this year.  Mercury is a loser that will be eliminated in the not too distant future.  Additionally, according to high-level executives they have had a turn-around plan in place for several years now and they are going to be showing Congress the plan along with the progress they have been making.  Word on the street is that Ford can be profitable in 2 years.  Of the Big 3 this is the company that deserves tax payer money the most.

GM is the hardest of the Big 3 to figure out.  This enormous company sells more cars than any other manufacturer in the world.  The problem is their expenses and costs are completely unmanageable.  They have some good solid products along with some real dogs.  With the proper restructuring this is a company that can be viable.  In fact, they can be a world power again, with the right changes.  The question is, do they have the plan and how much will it cost?  Additionally, if GM were a patient they would be on life support right now.  According to GM officials, without a $4 Billion dollar bailout the company will be forced to declare bankruptcy by month’s end.  I think GM needs all the benefits of bankruptcy, the flexibility to restructure labor agreements and debt to name only two.  In the end, I think Congress will see GM in the same light as Citibank… a company too big to allow it to fail.

Now let’s look at Chrysler, I think this is a company who’s viability is no longer relevant.  They are the smallest of the Big 3 by a lot.  Financially, they are in the worst situation, sources say they need $8 Billion this month to avoid bankruptcy.  And among the Big 3, in my opinion they produce the worst vehicles.  I know Chryslers and Jeeps have been around for generations, but I see absolutely no reason to give this company any money because there is no chance for them to be relevant any time soon.  So if I were in charge of this Big 3 mess I would decide that possibly as soon as January 2009, there would only be a Big 2… the times they are a changin’!

November was another horrible month

Auto sales for November will show a drop in sales for the 17th out of the last 18 months.  Every manufacturer saw a HUGE drop in sales, when was the last time Toyota experienced a 30% sales decline?  This will force auto manufacturers to continue the big incentives they are offering, and some will make them even more appealing.  So if you are considering buying a car in December expect and demand an incredibly low price!

When the Big 3 get their bail out money, what should they do with it?

Over the last couple of weeks there has been a great deal of hand-wringing about whether the Big 3 would receive a bail out and what stipulations should accompany the money.  Well, I have an idea.  If the Big 3 receive $25 Billion, why not make them use that money as sales incentives?  Imagine their ability to sell cars if they could take $5,000 off the price of 5 million vehicles without affecting their profits one cent!

If the vehicles produced by the Big 3 have ANY appeal to the public the result of being able to discount so many vehicles, so deeply, would be a huge turning over of inventory, which would help create profits, jobs, taxes, etc for at least a year.  With this added revenue the companies would have the funds to re-create their businesses.  And if they can not sell cars with this type of financial support is there really any hope for them?  I think this would be the best answer to a very tough question.

Bailing out the Big 3

Tomorrow executives for the Big 3 will be in front of Congress looking for $25 Billion dollars to keep their failing businesses afloat.  The question that begs to be asked is, would a $25 Billion dollar bailout be in the US tax payers best interest?  To try and answer this lets pretend we are a bank.  If you were loaning this amount of money to the Big 3 would this be a good loan, unfortunately the answer is no.  Although Chrysler is not publicly traded, you could buy all 3 auto makers for approximately $7 Billion dollars.  I came up with that figure by looking at the market value of Ford and GM along with an estimate of Chrysler’s worth.

By examining the bail out in this manner, it certainly does not seem like a good deal for the US tax payers.  This will not deter this deal from getting done, I still expect Congress to give the Big 3 the money they need tomorrow.  So if you are considering buying a Ford, GM or Chrysler I think you can buy with confidence knowing that they will be around for a while.  Additionally, the Big 3 are offering some great vehicles at unbelievably low prices!
